The Problem with Subscription Software
A quiet but damaging trend has taken hold in the software industry: perfectly functional tools that used to be a one-time purchase are being converted into recurring subscriptions. Photo management is one of the worst offenders. A popular photo app recently relaunched as $9.99/month — for software that does the same job it did before, just with a new billing model.
Every new subscription you add is a permanent reduction in your income. Ten small subscriptions become $100/month. $1,200 a year. For tools you already owned. That's not progress — it's extraction.

Cloud photo subscriptions like Google Photos and iCloud don't just cost money. They ask you to hand over your most personal files to a corporation's servers. That creates three risks most people don't think about until it's too late:
Privacy
Your photos — holidays, family moments, personal milestones — are stored on someone else's infrastructure, subject to their policies, scans, and data practices.
Vendor Lock-In
Getting your photos out of Google Photos or iCloud is deliberately difficult. They make it easy to upload and hard to leave.
No Guarantees
Services get discontinued, prices get raised, free tiers get cut. What happens to your photos when a company changes its mind?
What Happens When You Stop Paying?
This is the question subscription services don't advertise. Here's the reality:
- Google Photos: Once you exceed the free storage cap, new uploads stop. If you cancel a paid plan, photos already uploaded remain — but access is throttled and new syncs stop. Downloading everything requires navigating Google Takeout, which is slow and fragmented.
- iCloud: If your storage plan lapses, iCloud stops backing up your device. Photos stored only in iCloud may become inaccessible or get deleted after a grace period.
- Other subscription photo apps: Many lock your library behind a login wall the moment your payment fails. Your photos are held hostage until you pay again.
